Beyond Bed and Bath

Singapore has everything...except a good bed and bath shop. There is no Bed, Bath & Beyond. Woe is we. THE hardest things to find in Singapore thus far have been a decent shower curtain (if you can find one at all, granted if you don't mind a flimsy plastic one with fish on it you will be ok) and rings to hang the curtain. Of course Singapore can't be blamed for forgetful people who find curtain rings and then leave them behind in the store. (http://www.ikea.com.sg/products/product_display.asp?id=1943)

We moved into the apartment on Saturday. After about 6 trips to and from Carrefour (the big grocery/everything except shower curtains store buying all of those necessities when you are starting from scratch (cleaning supplies, bedding, lizard repellent, etc...). That's right! LIZARD REPELLENT. You will be happy to know it doesn't actually kill them, it just makes surfaces slippery so they can't cling to them (called PAM Cooking Spray in the U.S.) . We sprayed some outside the door to our "yard"--the area that Singaporeans refer to outside of the kitchen where the washer/dryer/maids are kept. Anyway, hopefully the lizards won't come inside. They are cute when they are outside. If they come in and poop on our walls all hell is going to break loose! You should see what happens when an ant wanders in under the kitchen door.
We have played tennis and gone swimming - we are working up to doing laps lengthwise in the pool; for now, we have to swim across the width of the pool - need to build up some stamina. We did see a small boy swimming consecutive laps lengthwise - something to work up to!

Mo is working hard. He has jumped right in and is reporting in Chinese! Ok, not really, but he is editing the stories of journalists around Asia, some of whom are Chinese. Having the hardest time telling them all apart. I started back to work today - very much looking forward to regaining an identity other than "wife!"

Here are our favorites signs so far: (This is apparently going to be a regular item)

Singapore is famous for it's curried fish heads. Here is one that we had at an Indian restaurant. Unfortunately the spoon is blocking the menacing eye - but you can make out the lips!

We also had fish cheeks at a Japanese restaurant - they were truly delicious. They must have come from a very big fish, or do fish have other cheeks??? Sorry - took the picture after we started eating (which part is the cheek?).

Cheapest meal so far: Lunch for the two of us Hong Kong noodles, Suntec City Food Court, cost: S$3.50 (that's a little over $2U.S. We have had ice cream here that costs twice as much (weight loss here we come!)

Most dangerous activity: Shopping. The malls and stores are packed with people - every day, all day. It is a contact sport. Even training at Fairway hasn't quite prepared us for this.

Coolest area for restaurants and bars: Clark Quay (pronounces 'key'):

And finally, some scenic shots from the week:
1. View from the river; 2. View of the Esplanade theater complex (shaped liked durian); 3) View of casino construction site due to open in 2010. Singaporeans will have to pay S$100 to enter the casinos while tourists and all others will be able to get in free. The government thinks it can control gambling by locals this way.
